PALATINE, ILLINOIS — A pedestrian was killed early Friday morning after being struck by a Metra commuter train in Palatine, leading to major service disruptions along the Union Pacific Northwest Line and an active investigation by authorities.
According to Metra officials, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 5:10 a.m. near the intersection of Northwest Highway and West Baldwin Road. Train No. 602 was traveling through the area when it struck the pedestrian under circumstances that have not yet been determined.
Emergency crews, including police and fire personnel, responded to the scene shortly after the collision was reported. Despite their efforts, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, age, or gender, pending notification of next of kin.
The incident prompted a temporary suspension of service on portions of Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest Line. Several trains were canceled, while others experienced significant delays as investigators worked at the scene and railroad crews assessed the area.
Officials also closed the railroad crossing at Baldwin Road and Northwest Highway to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic during the investigation. Commuters were advised to seek alternate routes and expect delays throughout the morning commute.
Investigators have not disclosed whether the pedestrian was attempting to cross the tracks or was walking along the rail corridor when the collision occurred. Witness information has also not been made public.
