Judith “Judy” Wyler Sheldon, 84, a respected San Francisco arts patron and daughter of legendary Oscar-winning filmmaker William Wyler, and her husband, Wylie Sheldon, 86, have died after being found unresponsive inside a running vehicle along Interstate 5 in Northern California.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the couple was discovered at approximately 5:46 p.m. on June 15, 2026, inside a Jeep Compass parked on the shoulder of northbound Interstate 5 near Redding. Authorities said the vehicle was still running when officers arrived at the scene.
Emergency responders immediately attempted life-saving measures, but both Judy and Wylie Sheldon were pronounced dead at the location. Officials have described the incident as medically related, although the exact cause and manner of death have not yet been determined. The investigation remains active, and autopsy results are pending.
Investigators have reported no evidence of foul play. Authorities also noted that temperatures in the region exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit on the day of the incident, though it remains unclear whether the extreme heat played any role in the couple’s deaths.
