I-96 Accident Today, I-96 and I-196 Crashes in West Michigan – One Dead in Separate Highway Incidents Near Grand Rapids and Saugatuck

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN — Authorities in West Michigan are investigating two separate serious highway crashes on Interstate 96 and Interstate 196, both of which resulted in at least one fatality and significant traffic disruption across the region.

According to law enforcement reports, the first incident occurred on Interstate 96 near the Grand Rapids area and involved a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck. Investigators say the vehicle allegedly made contact with the truck before the driver lost control, leading to a severe collision. Emergency responders arrived shortly after the crash was reported and worked at the scene.

Officials confirmed that at least one person was killed in the I-96 crash. The identity of the victim has not yet been released, as authorities are continuing the process of notifying family members. The exact circumstances surrounding the collision remain under active investigation.

In a separate incident on Interstate 196 in Allegan County near the Saugatuck area, police responded to a wrong-way crash involving multiple semi-trucks. Authorities say a vehicle entered the highway traveling against traffic before colliding with oncoming vehicles, prompting a major emergency response and extended road closure.

The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials reported that no other fatalities were recorded in the second crash, though the investigation is ongoing. Preliminary findings suggest that alcohol may have been a contributing factor, but this has not yet been officially confirmed. The identity of the driver has also not been released.

Both incidents caused major disruptions across key West Michigan transportation routes, with lanes closed for several hours as emergency crews worked to clear wreckage, assist motorists, and allow investigators to document the scenes.

Authorities continue to examine both crashes to determine the full sequence of events. Further updates are expected as more information is released by law enforcement.
