For five decades, Gene Bess built an extraordinary legacy at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He served as the program’s head coach from 1971 until his retirement in 2020, transforming a junior college basketball team into a nationally recognized powerhouse and becoming the winningest coach in college basketball history.
During his remarkable 50-season career, Bess amassed an incredible 1,300 victories, a milestone that placed him among the most accomplished coaches the sport has ever known. Under his leadership, Three Rivers College captured two NJCAA national championships, winning titles in 1979 and 1992, while also making numerous appearances in national tournaments and consistently competing at the highest level of junior college basketball.
Beyond the victories and championships, Bess earned widespread admiration for his dedication to his players and his unwavering commitment to the game. Former players, colleagues, and fans remember him as a mentor and teacher whose influence extended far beyond the basketball court.
