A New York City police officer was shot and a suspect was killed following a violent barricade situation in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn early Friday morning, according to authorities.
The incident began at approximately 5:45 a.m. when officers with the New York City Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire inside an apartment building on Kosciuszko Street in Bed-Stuy. Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered an armed individual who had barricaded himself inside one of the residences, triggering a major emergency response.
Police said officers heard additional gunfire coming from inside the apartment after reaching the building. As the situation intensified, authorities forced entry into the residence while attempting to secure the scene and determine whether anyone else remained in danger. Witnesses reported seeing people fleeing the building as police established a perimeter around the area.
During the confrontation, an exchange of gunfire occurred, and one NYPD officer was struck in the leg. Emergency medical personnel responded immediately, and the injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital. Authorities later confirmed that the officer was in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
The suspect, identified only as a 48-year-old man, was also shot during the incident. He was transported to Woodhull Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officials have not publicly released his identity, and investigators have not disclosed what circumstances led to the original reports of gunfire inside the apartment.
The NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit and hostage negotiation teams responded to the scene as a precaution, and several blocks surrounding the building remained closed for hours while officers secured the area and conducted an investigation.
