WASHINGTON, INDIANA — The Washington and Daviess County communities are mourning the tragic loss of Israel Waggoner, 28, who died in a devastating side-by-side rollover crash late Wednesday night. The fatal accident has left family members, friends, and loved ones grieving the sudden loss of a young man remembered for the connections he shared and the impact he had on those around him.
According to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 10:37 p.m. to County Road 450 South, west of County Road 50 West, following reports of a serious rollover crash involving a side-by-side utility vehicle. Initial reports indicated that one person was trapped beneath the overturned vehicle.
When first responders arrived, they discovered a white 2016 Polaris side-by-side that had overturned on its passenger side and come to rest off the south side of the roadway. Investigators determined that Miranda Knepp, 31, of Washington, Indiana, was operating the vehicle, while Israel Waggoner was seated in the front passenger seat.
Authorities said Knepp told investigators she swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, causing her to lose control of the Polaris. The side-by-side reportedly slid several yards before overturning.
Investigators indicated that neither occupant was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Waggoner sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, Knepp submitted to a chemical test that reportedly produced a result of 0.12. She was subsequently taken into custody and lodged in the Daviess County Security Center on a charge of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Death. Authorities noted that the charge is an allegation and that any determination of guilt will be made through the judicial process.
As news of Waggoner’s passing spread throughout the community, tributes and messages of support began pouring in for his family. Loved ones are remembering him as a son, relative, friend, and cherished member of the community whose life ended far too soon.
The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
