Tributes have been pouring in following the passing of Dr. Kelly Fredericks, a respected family medicine specialist, academic, and well-known member of the Sydenham community. She died on Thursday, leaving colleagues, friends, patients, and community members in shock and mourning.
Friends and acquaintances have taken to social media to express their grief, remembering Dr. Fredericks as a compassionate and kind-hearted individual who consistently cared for those around her. Many described her as someone who made others feel valued and seen, with a warmth that left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.
Sherwyn Cupido-Weaich remembered her as a “rebel with a cause,” describing Dr. Fredericks as a woman who moved through life with strength, honesty, beauty, and compassion. He noted that she was both fierce and gentle in the ways that mattered most, bringing light, laughter, and presence into every space she entered. “She had a heart that people will remember and a spirit that could not be copied,” he said.
Linley Ryan also paid tribute, saying Dr. Fredericks had a unique ability to touch people’s hearts and would be deeply missed by all who knew her. Others have shared that they are struggling to process the sudden news of her passing.
Dr. Fredericks was a highly respected medical professional with more than a decade of experience across both the public and private healthcare sectors. She specialized in Family Medicine, with a particular interest in allergies, and was actively involved in academic medicine. She also lectured at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and contributed to the training and assessment of future healthcare professionals through national board examination panels.
She had recently featured in a local “Elevate Her” campaign and was involved in the opening of Glenwood Family Practice alongside her colleague, Dr. Darnae Santos.
Community members, including Combined Community Watch representative Domenic King, expressed deep sorrow, noting that the community is “in shock” and struggling to find words to describe the loss of someone so widely respected.
Dr. Fredericks will be remembered for her dedication to medicine, her impact as an educator, and the kindness she showed throughout her life.
